The Norwich Players
King Alfred's Kitchen by Chris James
Part of the MadderFIRST festival of new work.
A warm-hearted sequel to Friendly Bombs, Winner of the 2016 Nugent Monck New Writing Prize. John Betjeman is fifty. His attempts to run a tea-shop in Wantage with his long-suffering wife Penelope are not going well. The bolognese is always off, the furniture is alarmingly unpredictable and the famous White Horse of Uffington can’t actually be seen through the windows. As his world (quite literally) begins to fall apart, this melancholic fool must attempt to win back his wife’s affections, wrestle with his conscience and deal with the looming threat of a Food Inspector.
Occasionally poignant and frequently farcical, Chris James’ new play brings to life a peculiarly English man.
