THE ACCRINGTON PALS • A moving and powerful picture of civilian life during wartime
A hard-hitting, humorous and moving play set in Accrington during 1914-16. ‘The Accrington Pals’
was premiered by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1981, and is based on the true story of the innocent and enthusiastic battalion of men who answered Lord Kitchener’s call for volunteers, and marched off to the Great War. Their experiences in the trenches are contrasted with those of the wives and sweethearts they leave behind. The play is full of humour - yet tragedy is never far away as the men of the East Lancashire Regiment head for the Battle of the Somme.

LADY WINDERMERE’S FAN • A witty satire on the morals of Victorian society |
Lady Windermere entertains thoughts of leaving her husband of two years because she believes he may be having an affair. And, to make matters worse, when she confronts him he responds by inviting the other woman to her birthday party! Wilde’s typically witty, intelligent and urbane comedy was first produced in 1892. Misunderstandings and deceptions abound as the author delivers a biting satire on the morals of Victorian society - and particularly on marriage!

I AM A CAMERA • A Portrait of Berlin in the 1930s |
This play forms a crucial link in the artistic chain which ultimately led to the musical ‘Cabaret’ in 1966, and then on to the 1972 film in which Liza Minnelli starred as nightclub singer Sally Bowles. John van Druten drew his inspiration for ‘I am a Camera’ (1951) from the earlier semi-autobiographical short stories of Christopher Isherwood, which were eventually brought together as ‘The Berlin Stories’ in 1946. The focus is on Sally Bowles, Isherwood, and Berlin in the 1930s; Hitler is moving into power, and the city is a sinister, yet intriguing mix of cafés, grotesque nightlife, dreamers, powerful mobs, and millionaires.
